PAST/BIO: Though Tosh was born in London, her parents were originally from Osaka, Japan and relocated back there when she was two, returning to England when she was eleven. They lived in Oxford, and she maintains an oxfordshire accent rather than an Osaka accent even when speaking Japanese. Both her parents worked for the RAF. Tosh had a normal childhood and, after graduating with distinction from university in 1995, she got a job with the Ministry of Defence at the Lodmoor Research Facility, a government think tank.
She worked there for some time, before a terrorist group kidnapped her mother in 2003. In order to try to save her mother, Tosh stole plans for a sonic modulator from the Lodmoor facility and built the modulator, taking it to the leader of the group. When UNIT stopped the group, they arrested Tosh as well and imprisoned her indefinitely, stripping away her rights.
While imprisoned by UNIT, Tosh met Captain Jack Harkness, who was impressed by her technological genius. Not only had she built the sonic modulator quickly and with no help, she also intuitively fixed problems in the plans that would have kept it from working. Captain Harkness offered her a new start, provided she work for Torchwood Three for a minimum of five years.
Tosh has worked as the technological expert for Torchwood Three for almost five years now. In 2006, she pretended to be a medic in order to fill in for Owen Harper and examined a supposed alien corpse at Albion Hospital, which turned out to be a pig that had been genetically modified by the Raxacoricofallapatorian Slitheen family. At that time she met the ninth incarnation of the Doctor, making her the only Torchwood Three employee other than Jack to have met him.
While she thrived professionally at Torchwood, her time there was marked by failed attempts at having a life outside the organisation. She’s harboured a crush on Dr. Owen Harper for some time, but her feelings have never been returned, and her romantic life has been somewhat unlucky. Her first relationship was with an alien named Mary, who gave her a telepathic necklace. The necklace gave her insight into her coworkers’ minds that strained her relationships with them. Even though Mary was using her, she was angry with Jack when her leader sent the alien to the sun. Later she would a brief but ill-fated romance with Tommy Brockless, which ended when she had to help him get back to 1918, knowing he would die soon after he returned.
At one point, Tosh became stuck in 1941 with Jack, and faced racial prejudice from the people there until Jack convinced them she was a codebreaker for the British. During that time, she learned that Jack Harkness was an alias, and that Jack could not die. After Owen used the rift manipulator to bring them back, she helped him to open the rift fully at the urging of what appeared to be her mother’s ghost.
After the Abaddon incident and Jack’s disappearance, Tosh and the team briefly went to the Himalayas on a wild goose chase before returning to Cardiff and managing without him.
